THE MODEL

There were only six original Coupes ever made. Those cars captured the 1965 FIA World Championship for America in the last years before mega-money took American roadracing from its roots and from the average guy. Despite the fact that the design never entered production, those six cars, hand-built upon 289 AC chassis, are some of the most valuable collector cars on the planet. Each of the original six Daytona Coupes is valued at more than $8 million.

This car is one of the most unique and stunning shapes in automotive history. Each Factory Five Type 65 Coupe is true to the road racing legacy that gave the design its birth, and yet with modern engineering and technologies, our cars are much more livable than the originals.

The Type 65 Coupe-R is based on the complete kit version of the Type 65 Coupe, but made for professional competition.  The largest difference between the Gen 3 Coupe and the Gen 3 Coupe-R is that the Coupe-R comes with a competition cage chassis (powdercoated in white like all Factory Five competition version chassis).

THIS CAR

This is a 1965 titled Factory Five Racing Type 65 Coupe , Daytona Coupe. It will be available on Cars & Bids.  Factory Five's tag line is "The Built, Not Bought Company!"  They have been offering component car kits since 1995.  This particular car is an homage to the amazing Shelby Daytona Coupe's that ran at LeMans.

In 2019, the owner was looking to do a street legal project that would also be the ultimate track day car.  He spoke with Tommy Fulbright of Fulbright Motorsports. Tommy had been involved in many facets of motorsports ranging from open wheel SCCA cars to 900hp Ultra4 trophy trucks type rigs from the ground up, and was crew chief for 3-time Utra4 Championships. He also had worked for indirectly for Shelby American and Chip Foose helping to build the iconic Eleanor Mustang and the Foose edition Camaro.  Tommy suggested a Factory Five coupe and the owner instantly fell in love with the car, the engineering of the Gen 3 chassis by FFR and the story of Shelby himself.

They wanted to showcase the car at the Big Bend Open Road Race in Fort Stockton, Texas. So, they chose components that would allow the car a lot of top speed, cooling, and endurance. The idea was to build the car like Shelby would have with today’s components.

Final parts list from FFR was primarily Body, Glass, interior aluminum panels, front aero, IRS, front A arms, and rear wing. Everything else was sourced elsewhere, all brand new hardware, no used parts whatsoever.

Tommy summarized the build for us: This build, from start to finish was a definite challenge, but in a good way.  Having the ability to "build from scratch" our own version of one of the most iconic cars in history.  From the air jack system to the triple adjustable remote reservoir coil overs, we wanted to use the best possible options while maintaining a reasonable build cost.  The car displays characteristics of the original from the Pin Drive Forgeline wheels, Borla ITB-Stack style fuel injection, and the Aviaid dry sump oil system. Aviad built the oil pans for the original race cars.  The electronics in the car are all solid-state with no fuses or relays, allowing for a fully customizable/diagnosable electrical system via laptop.  The 5.4L Aluminator crate engine is controlled via Holley Dominator ECU.  We installed coolers for all major fluids like power steering, transmission and differential for the abuse of endurance type racing.  This car was built to handle whatever can be thrown at it from banging gears on a closed course, to running full song at 8000+rpm in 6th gear at speeds beyond 200mph.

Very important to mention that this car is street legal and road registered as a 1965!
