THE MODEL
The 1958 Nash Metropolitan is a compact, two-door automobile built by the American Motors Corporation (AMC). Designed as a small, affordable car for urban commuters, it combined European-inspired styling with American manufacturing. The car was originally a collaboration with the British automaker Austin, and its design reflected a blend of practicality and style.
With a 1500 mm wheelbase and weighing only around 1,600 pounds, the Metropolitan was notably smaller than most American cars of the era, making it ideal for city driving and tight parking spaces. It featured a modest 1.5-liter (1489cc) inline-four engine producing around 52 horsepower, paired with either a 3-speed manual transmission or an optional automatic.
In terms of design, the 1958 Nash Metropolitan showcased chrome accents, round headlights, and a stylish, streamlined body, making it stand out with a retro, almost futuristic look. The interior was simple but functional, with space for two passengers in front and a small rear seat area for additional storage.
Overall, the 1958 Nash Metropolitan was marketed as a "second car" for families, appealing to those seeking a fuel-efficient, practical, and affordable vehicle for daily use. It gained a loyal following, particularly among drivers who valued its distinctive look and efficient performance, but it was eventually phased out by AMC in 1961 as consumer preferences shifted towards larger vehicles.
