As a Convertible Phaeton, it combines the open-air experience of a convertible with the sophistication and refinement expected from a high-end Buick.
Powered by Buick’s 248 cubic inch (4.1-liter) straight-eight engine, the 51C Super produced around 107 horsepower, providing smooth acceleration and a comfortable, refined driving experience. It was paired with a three-speed manual transmission, and its suspension system was designed for a smooth, stable ride, making it ideal for long road trips or casual cruising.
The design of the 1940 Buick 51C Super Convertible Phaeton is one of its most striking features. The Phaeton model featured a full-length convertible top that could be manually lowered, providing an open-air driving experience. The body was sleek and aerodynamic, with flowing lines, a prominent chrome grille, and elegant detailing, including chrome bumpers, door handles, and trim. The car’s stance was imposing yet graceful, exuding a sense of grandeur typical of luxury cars of the era.

THE CAR
This 1940 Buick was the first year for sealed beam headlights, self-cancelling turn signals and no running boards. This Buick was GM’s introduction of the new C-Body cars, also known as the streamlined torpedo or C body cars. Car is equipped with a dual equipped windshields. One for the front passengers and one for the back seat passengers. This is an aftermarket item. Car is equipped with full size spare and jack. Front bumper has receptacles for two ceremonial flags, US Flag and Sate of California flag. Both are included with the sale of the car.
The current owner acquired the Buick in 2006. Prior to 2006, the Buick was owned by a Nor Cal Buick Club Member, Stuart Hall, who acquired the car from another Buick Club member, Jerry Carpenter, who did a full restoration on the Buick in the late 70’s or early 80’s. Car was said to be a basket case, prior to restoration. Recent improvement to the suspension includes adjustable upgraded air bags installed inside the front and rear coil springs.
